Trade structural steel
Structural steel for builders and contractors.
Beams, frames, mezzanine floors and steel for house extensions. Fabricated to the structural engineer’s drawings, then delivered or fitted as agreed.
For contractors and builders who already have a drawing, or a sketch to start from. Beam supply for builders is also on the builders’ page. Fitting is on beam installation.

What we supply and fabricate
Trade steel for builders, developers and self-builders. The brief is the drawing you send.
Steel beams
RSJ, universal beam (UB), universal column (UC), parallel flange channel (PFC), angles and hollow sections. Cut and drilled to the engineer’s drawing.
Steel frames
Frames for builders and main contractors, fabricated from the drawings you send. Erection is included when it is part of the quote.
Mezzanine floors
Structural steel platforms inside an existing building, fabricated to the engineer’s drawing.
House extensions and openings
Beams and columns for extensions and new openings, including load-bearing wall removals. Lifting and temporary propping are planned around the opening when we fit the steel.
How an enquiry runs
01
Drawings or a sketch
Send the structural engineer’s drawings and calculations, or a sketch if the drawings are not ready. PDF, DWG and hand sketches are all accepted on the contact form.
02
Estimate
We estimate from what you send. A sketch starts that conversation. It is not a firm quote.
03
Written quote
A firm written quote follows once the drawings have been checked. A delivery date is confirmed with that quote.
04
Fabrication
Sections are fabricated to those drawings. We coordinate with your structural engineer on the drawings you send.
05
Delivery or fitting
Supply, delivery to site, or supply and fit, as agreed on the quote. Beam fitting is described on the beam installation page.
What to send
- The structural engineer’s drawings (PDF or DWG) and calculations.
- A hand sketch, if you need an estimate before those drawings are issued.
- Section marks already on the engineer’s schedule, such as RSJ, UB, UC or PFC.
- The site postcode.
- Whether you want the steel supplied, delivered to site, or supplied and fitted.
For a house extension or a new opening, include the engineer’s drawing for the beam. Fitting, lifting and temporary propping are set out on beam installation. Frames and wider structural steelwork are also described under structural steelwork.
Questions from builders
- Which steel sections do you supply?
- Universal beams, universal columns, RSJs, parallel flange channels, angles and hollow sections. Universal beams, universal columns and parallel flange channels are quoted from the drawings you send.
- Can you price a job from a sketch?
- A sketch, PDF or DWG can start an estimate through the contact form. The firm written quote is issued after the structural engineer’s drawings have been checked.
- Who provides the structural calculations?
- A structural engineer’s calculations are needed. We fabricate to the drawings you send, and coordinate with your structural engineer on those drawings.
- Do you fit the steel, or supply it only?
- Both are available. Supply, delivery to site, and supply and fit are agreed on the quote. Residential beam fitting, including temporary propping for openings, is described for Edinburgh and Midlothian on the beam installation page.
- Where do you work from?
- Forge & Frame is at Unit 2B, Eastfield Industrial Estate, Penicuik, Midlothian EH26 8HA. The areas listed on the site are Edinburgh, Livingston, the Lothians, the Scottish Borders and Fife. Use the contact form, or email info@ff-steel.co.uk. The desk is open Monday to Friday, 07:00–18:00.
