A kit buyer is usually outside our crew radius, or already has a telehandler and three people who have bolted a portal. This page is for that person. The steel is the same as a Central Belt supply-and-fit job. The difference is who stands it, and who owns the lift insurance on the day.
We ship from Penicuik to any UK postcode we can get a wagon into. Aberdeenshire, Cumbria, Northumberland, the Highlands — the kit does not care. The frame is still hot-rolled S355 to EXC2, not a light cold-rolled pack with a farm photograph on the brochure.
What “kit” means on this invoice
Columns and rafters cut and drilled in the shop. Purlins. Bolts. Cladding to the colour and profile you picked. Drawings a competent erector can work from. A holding-down layout your groundworks contractor can set out before we load. That is the kit. It is not a foundation. It is not a telehandler. It is not a weekend with a YouTube playlist if you have never stood steel.
Standard grid: spans 12 / 15 / 18 / 21 / 24 m, eaves 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 m, bays 4.5–6 m. Imperial is fine — the designer still thinks in feet under the hood. Odd sizes ship; they take a day longer in detailing.
When kit is the wrong buy
If the site is in the Lothians, Borders, Fife, Falkirk or the Glasgow fringe and you do not have a crew, buy supply-and-fit. If the building is complex livestock housing with a lot of junctions, a local erector who has done housing is cheaper than learning on the herd. If you wanted us to pour the slab, stop — we do not, kit or not.
Kit is the right buy when you already priced a local lift, or you are far enough that our crews would be living in a van. Tell us the postcode. We will say which route is honest.
Lead time and the 24-hour price
After you approve sizes, a standard portal kit is usually weeks, not a season. Galvanising queues and cladding colour can move that. We put a date on the 24-hour price, not in a slogan. The price itself is not the table on the cost page— those are conservative “from” figures at about £40/m² on the kit band. Foundations extra. Site photo required.
Planning still sits with you. Class 18 prior notification in Scotland; English and Welsh rules are different if the kit is crossing the border. We issue drawings for your agent. We do not lodge them. FFIS does not fund the kit, the roof or the concrete. CAGS can apply to eligible crofters for buildings — ask before you count it.
How to order without a DWG
Use, width, length, eaves, postcode, photo. Kit selected on the form. Phone first. WhatsApp the picture to 0131 496 0777 or email info@ff-steel.co.uk. If you want to play with bays first, design your farm shed and send that spec — it is still a kit conversation if you tick kit-only.
Older kit copy lives at portal frame kit sheds Scotland. This page is the farmer-language version: no architect onboarding, no Class 6 (that heading is English; Scotland uses Class 18).
A kit farm shed leaving Penicuik is still a Scottish building even when the postcode is English. Snow and wind are sized for the site you photograph, not for a generic depot. If you are buying a livestock building kit for Fife or a machinery kit for the Borders, say the use on the form — cladding and galvanising change, the wagon does not.
We are not a 1990s kit warehouse. There is no showroom of coloured sheds. There is a shop floor and a phone. If you wanted a fabricator who also pours concrete and sells cubicles, this is the wrong kit. If you wanted hot-rolled EXC2 members and drawings you can stand, this is the door.
