Heavy Galvanized Biomass Wood Chip Storage Barn
Client: Dryburgh Wood Estates

1.0 Project Narrative
Dryburgh Wood Estates required a specialized, heavy-duty storage barn to house highly combustible biomass wood chips. The storage environment required heavy machinery clearance (for high-reach telehandlers dumping timber loads) and complete protection from damp timber rot, demanding an open-sided, corrosion-resistant steel superstructure.
2.0 Structural & Environmental Challenges
The interior atmosphere of damp timber chip storage exhibits high humidity and condensation risks, causing standard primer-painted steel structures to degrade within 5-7 years.
3.0 Applied Engineering Solutions
We fabricated the entire portal frame from heavy S355JR grade sections and subjected them to full Hot-Dip Galvanizing (BS EN ISO 1461). We integrated cast-in concrete base plates so the steel uprights mount directly on top of 1.5m high precast concrete panels, creating an immune barrier to silage/moisture corrosion.
